Haven't updated in like a year, too bad, busy. But I do have a couple things to throw up here in the next couple days. Firstly, I re-upped this for an e-homie (T.R.O.Y.) and thought it would be taken down within 48 hrs but it's still up a week later, so best to hurry if you want it.

Kausing Konfusion

Pharoahe Monch & Prince Poetry: Greatest duo of all time? An argument could be made. Anyway, I personally feel that each album is phenomenal in a very different way. Stress: The Extinction Agenda is most commonly revered as the classic from the duo, but people seem to discount how revolutionary the debut was in '91; it is pretty much a flawless album and probably my vote for their best effort. TEA is not only a superb album in every conceivable facet of hip-hop music & culture, but it also brought an extremely lyrical light to an age old, almost overly common concern: stress- plain and simple. Monch's expression of his plights, in both his lyrical genius and his maturity, is not only exemplary of hip-hop at its finest, but also raised notions of what this genre could accomplish (along with Illmatic of the same year). Finally, they dropped The Equinox, which I think is a very fuid album with some indeniable bangers. Also, I think OK and Equinox are more important for their respective release years than is Stress, a point I often find overlooked by fellow listeners. Anyway, if you haven't heard any of these please do with immediacy and don't be shy to comment on which album is your favorite or which you think is their best/most important/influential.

That gangsta dopeness outta Oakland. If you appreciate the highly produced, funky stylings of, say, Dr. Dre, and the sunny, rundown hood rhymes of the West Coast in general and the Bay area in specific, you will enjoy this unreleased album from 1998.

More Funkiness

From Philadelphia I'm gonna travel north of the border, but not with a total lapse of reason. This 1993 debut from The Rascalz is not easy to pinpoint, unlike most of the U.S. releases at this time, and most of the Canadian hip-hop to catch shine as well, this album does not strictly subscribe to an East Coast or West Coast feel. Granted, this album doesn't quite convey the hardness of the North Philly streets, but, in a somewhat similar manner to Sha'dasious, this album is able highlight the deeper tones in the idea of "funkiness", their mastery of the bass loop being integral. Oh, and the drums aren't too shabby either. The lyrics are variant, to say the least, but don't judge the content/lyricism by the song titles. "Funky Migraine", a seemingly simple hard knocking funky track contains its fair share of nigh pointless lines, but peep the opening verse, which poses the age old question: "a tree falls in the forestand nobodies around/ does it still make a noise, does it still make a sound?" and "I'm flyin' like a kite-first up, then down/take control by your insight so I'm thinkin'/should I, must I light another..." and the general (though at times quite creative) hashish banter continues.

Philly Phunk

Pretty much the definition of Philly hip-hop. This album is rugged and funky, gangsta funk without the West Coast "G-Funk" label, if you will. Anyway, Sha'dasious is a straight up legend, he has produced countless bangers from the land of Illadelph and continues to put his thing down, Philly style through and through.

Micranots

I Self Divine and Kool Akiem Allah don't put out your standard Atlanta rap music. In fact, they don't really create the type of hip-hop you hear anywhere, they have a pretty darn individual sound, which is what initially draws me to groups upon first hearing them and deciding whether or not to actually Listen full bore to the rest of their muzics. Anyway, I enjoy these three albums quite a bit. Oh, and Return Of The Travellahs is their first release (as far as I know) that was put out on cassette only in '96, then rereleased on CD in 2003.

No Shirt, No Shoes, Plenty Of Service

People Without Shoes, on the independent Rage Records label, were an interesting group in my eyes. First of all, they were close to being your typical mid '90s independent hip-hop group in terms of their sound and their emceeing (and their independent-ness...), but unlike so many others they were able to release an album on top of a VLS and a couple EPs, pretty solid output, especially by underground standards. But on top of this, I find a great deal of variety in their music; they have some of those standard heavy, rugged underground beats, they have some lighter, more fun loving, West Coastish cuts, and they have some tracks on which they attempt to showcase their lyricism. Now, I don't know if this was due to the differing ideals of individual group members, an appreciation for multiple sub-genres/aspects of hip-hop music, an attempt to fit into different molds, or what, but I find it a commendable feat and definitely think these guys are worth checking.

Melvin Gibbs, a bassist who's been on the scene for three decades now, is responsible for most, if not all, of the production on these releases. Gibbs is one of the more prolific artists of the modern era, having worked in just about every musical field, having handled drum programming and keyboard on top of his bass work for various live groups, having been an integral part of Rage Records, and having been called one of the world's greatest bassists on multiple occassions from a variety of different sources.

One Leg Up: Series One

Just for convenience's sake ;)

These first three are up and you've probably found the latter three by now, but here's a consolidated discog in case anyone missed one. All are good, but The Ill Funk Freaker takes the cake with ease; I devote a great deal of time listening to music that is new to me, since I missed out on so much, but this shit has my fingers aching hitting the replay button. Are: Don Chalant, Woozy Medwick and Hyde Hife.
I only listened to this for the first time a couple weeks ago, but it is damn ill, probably gonna be my favorite album of '07, at least really high on the list. The Life Of A Fool/Jacaranda coupling is crazy dope! Many great single tracks on this, on top of the album being constructed well. This trio (also calling themselves Arch Druids: http://www.myspace.com/brothazbent) comes out of Los Angeles on the newly founded Blunt Boogie Records label: http://bluntboogie.bigcartel.com/, but they say they will be releasing an Arch Druids album soon, so be sure to keep an eye out.

How You Livin'?

More classic shit from Phill Most Chill aka Phill Most The Soulman. Be sure to check out his blog: http://www.thatrealschitt.com. He is currently showcasing a few demos and promises to up some more if people show interest. This album was released on Easy Street Records and really embodied that early Philly sound/attitude; the intellectuals' Schoolly D, if you will. Well, maybe not quite, but Phill brings the heat on the production and really holds his own on the mic. I would consider this album classic status and for anyone peeping the new Phill Most Chill limited releases not knowing about his bad ass alter-ego then this is a must for your own historical well being.

Coming out on the Centrifugal Phorce label, this EP was pretty much a prequel to Atoms Family (later being released in conjuction with Atoms Family Vol. 1). As such, you can hear some early production from Cryptic One, and rapping from Molecule and Whichcraft, plus a couple featurings from Jest One and Outa Limits. Seems as though Every track from the EP is on youtube if you need to perform further research.

Gutters Of The UK

Some more nice joints from across the pond! This is a pretty classic UK release on the Liberty Grooves label. This group consisted of the classic hip-hop triad: emcee: Ced One; producer: Sigher; and DJ: Prime Cuts, and they were able to very accurately convey the mid traditional '90s hip-hop vibe/message/details; this EP easily rivals many of the independent releases of the time hailing from the 5 Boroughs. Rumor has (or had...) it that they were planning to drop a new EP, but I haven't heard anything on that for a while now.

As you can see on the cover, Large Professor handles most of the album, with Big Grundge producing the 4 remaining tracks not produced by LP. Neek hails from Flushing, and had been down with LP for over 10 years prior to putting out this release (not really sure why it took so long...), as you can see in the video below. He was also featured on Large Professor's The LP and joined in on MC Shan's LP produced posse cut: Pee-Nile Reunion in '93. They started putting out singles for this LP in the late '90s and in 1999 caught a couple on Replay Records and Freeze Records, the first a small, though fairly consistent catalog in its brief time and the second having a vastly larger, more scattered discography. Anyway, when it came time to put out the album Neek and LP decided against the more established indy labels, releasing Exotic's Raw on High Rise Records.

Here are a few vids from the featured releases:

Da Skitzoooooo

Hailing from San Diego, California, Anthony O'Neal Davenport started laying tracks down in the mid '90s, having a track The Next Chapter (Strictly Underground) LP from 1995 I upped a while back. That same year he dropped his first 12", Who You Talkin' 2 on the prolific Echo International label. Two years later he put out his second 12", Storm Brewing. Now, I enjoy both of these 12"s (and you can find em on a few other blogs), but they didn't really blow my mind. However, I found his '98 and '99 EPs, Split Decision and Split Decision Wax No. 2, and and they really made me look at Tony in a different light. Maybe it was due to the fact that they presented me with more tracks, and as such a greater variety of styles and music, but these really shot Da Skitzo up on my list of favorite/most underrated artists. The Grinch was especially a standout for me, though not immediately. Upon first listen all the tracks were pretty much on the same level (as is often the case, I find), but then I really started to feel the instrumental for this track, the whole haunting steez and whatnot, but I still wasn't feeling the lyrics to any great extent. Well, I'll let you, the critic, listen at your leisure, but needless to say, this song and a few others have really grown on me and are getting some pretty good rotation in my neck of the woods.

If you are unfamiliar, listen to Gothic Architecture EP and see what you think.
Why should you listen to, and like, Rubberoom? I mean, besides the simple fact that I, your trusted source for good hip-hop says so, of course... The only logical place to start is the beginning: Synapse Gap and Beneath The Surface. The beats! the drums are great on these two tracks, both of them utilizing quick and dichotomous drum loops. On Synapse Gap we get the deep first and third beat bass kick, with some grace notes to keep us on our toes; this deep drum vein is then enhanced by the almost jingling second and fourth beat stressed shaker that rides atop the beat. To further accentuate the heady bassline we are given, every sixteen bars, a wood block just before the first downbeat, instant headnodification. The chorus brings in a chromatic harp scale backed by a smooth saxophone loop and followed by some "ooh"-ing background vocals before the menacing darkness of the main loop returns. Beneath The Surface again offers some atypical sounding drums banged out in syncopated fashion, the long cymbal ride before the three beat being the basis for the grooving. This piece gets a little more intricate with the instrumental samples, the low piano providing great texture and a much mellower backdrop for the slight harshness of the drum sequence. Then we are introduced to the lovely trumpet loop, though only briefly, as we are given a new trumpet loop just a few bars later, each only lasting two loops. Later, the first trumpet loop, with its almost whiny, vocal quality, returns for a four loop stint, the final go accentuated by the absence of the drums.

"Enter phrases
the pages of my notebook is like mazes
You'll get lost if you don't know the phases of the specimen
Take a lesson in how I make a mess of men"

That's how Synapse Gap opens, and the science, both in subject matter and verbal execution, continues throughout, wordplay on play at almost all times, with an excellent balance between the more complex lines and shorter, more trivial lines, such as:

"Travel in capsules
Givn' rascals hassles
In shaded areas of castles I baffle"
Well, I have exhausted both myself and my audience (if any) I'm sure, so that'll be the end of my attempt to convince people of the brilliance of Rubberoom. Enjoy!

Mo' Illa

I've already put up some of E.C Illa's more readily available material, but this post will probe a little deeper into his discography. Download at your leisure, just know this stuff is very good; I'll be adding some more later, but this is the important post.

As is the usual with my Chicago posts, Kevin Beacham of Time Travel Radio (http://www.myspace.com/timetravelradio) deserves innumerable thanks. That Ill State Of Mind LP is incredibly rare and Kev's upload a couple months ago is the only version I have seen and is missing the tracks which were also included on other releases (Ease Back EP & Live From The Ill EP, which was upped a while ago). And in all seriousness, if you aren't checking his myspace for fresh weekly exclusives you are cheating your own ears.

Again, no youtubes, but if you haven't heard Diggers With Gratitude's The Be Intelligent EP you can find a link HERE.

Anyway, Phill Most Chill is an originator and luckily for us is having some respect paid his way finally. Having grown up very near the boogie down Bronx, though in Connecticut, Phill Stroman became interested in hip-hop at its earliest stages, later moving to Philadelphia. There's plenty more info to be found on the history and current state of Phill, so go dig it up and be sure to for more from the Soulman As this release states: "Beats banged out in 1994, rhymes constructed in 2004." And look out for some Baritone Tiplove here in the foreseeable future!

Some instrumentals really need to be listened to on their own in order to appreciate their full genius; now, it's easy to hear Dan The Automator's brilliant beats and song structure under Kool Keith's classically quirky rhyming, but when listened to alone they take on a whole new meaning. Treat your ears.

Hangar 18 Is No More

In light of the recent news that Hangar 18 has disbanded I have decided to post up their discography. According to Alaska both paWL and Windnbreeze are moving on with business pursuits outside the music industry while Alaska has joined forces with Kojo to become Alaska And Kojo Are The Crack Epidemic (http://www.myspace.com/alaskaandkojoare) so be sure to check that out and support the musicians! Anyway, if that made any sense to you, then enjoy these if something's new to you. If the name is new to you these guys were part of Atoms Family (which of course is now defunct as well) and signed to Definitive Jux and pretty much just made music that they thought was good. Not everyone will agree and I'm sure some people will hate this stuff, but I imagine a couple heads will, if they don't already, enjoy the Hangar sound. Interesting production and crazy flows regardless of whether you think they're shit or geniuses. As always, if anyone from Hangar 18 would like these links taken down leave a comment or email kimani17@gmail.com and it shall be done with immediacy.

Canada's Cash Crop

Rascalz: Misfit and Red 1 in the front, Kemo on the beats. These guys were Canada's finest for '97/'98; this album is ill, lyrics and mic styles are dope and Kemo has some real nice drum production. As would be expected, their 1999 and 2001 follow ups couldn't really compare to this jewel, but they're listenable in my book and if you're new to the group and dig this album you may wish to look into them.

Some Real Live Shit

K-Def & Larry-O, keepin' it Real! Peace to Hank Mobley... Anyway, I would like to have seen much more from this familial duo, their level of quality is quite consistent. K-Def has produced plenty of bangers, but still isn't quite the name he should be; Larry-O, on the other hand, has been slept on even more, in my opinion. I don't think he is as talented in his respective field as his beat oriented cousin and obviously not nearly as prolific, but I recently read a comment on a youtube vid (I believe the one below) stating that the emcee was "terrible." Now I'll admit he's no Rakim level genius on the M-I, but he is quite charasmatic and holds his flow particularly well. Also, I'm beginning to learn that Real Live are lesser known than I had originally assumed, so if you are unfamiliar, familiarize.

D-D-D-DOPE! Seems as though nothing is known about this album except that it's very good. According to discogs it was released on NOIR Records, though no other releases are listed. I have reason to believe these cats hail from Philly, and I'm sure someone can assert or refute this fact, so if you can, please do. And if anyone has anymore info, please grace me with it. Major shoutout to Markshot for putting me on to this little work of sickness. Best check the vids:

Tha' Hatchetmen D.O.P.E.-T. - not only one of the craziest names for a group, but also an absolutely dope crew. Well, at least as far as I know. All I have heard or seen is this one song 12", but this is a remix of their first single, if I'm not mistaken. And then the only release discogs lists is a '98 6 track (plus instrus) EP entitled First Strike. So if anyone has these and would like to share their rip, I shan't object... Anyway, here's the track and a DL link in case you don't wanna download the whole 12". Enjoy if you haven't already!

Skee-Lo was born in Chicago, but moved to LA at an early age and his sound/lyrics are straight mid '90s South Cali. I'm sure most people are gonna know the title track, so that should be enough for people to at least check the youtubes (the best two are embed disabled).

Mass Influence

Mass Influence debuted with these first two 12"s on Elemental Recordings before catching the eye of the small, but fairly dope independent Danish label Boulevard Connection Records to release their LP. This group consists of Applejac, Cognito, emcee H2o (of Yall So Stupid fame), who is still making music and also goes by Kid Captain Coolout, and of course Xavier Hargrove (Spearhead X).

Not much more to say, great beats and samples from a classic album.

I just found out about this via request, shit is dope and I hope to have the full track (if not the 12") soon: Link. Anyway, this album is obviously most famous for Back In The Day, which in my opinion is a pretty amazing song, the vibe Ahmad is able to create is not only perfectly suiting to the lyrics and message of the song, but it is a vibe not too overwhelming common in the genre. Not to say it is utterly unique to this track, and indeed I'd like to make a compilation featuring these types of songs at some point, but this theme isn't the most prevalent in hip-hop. However, I think the rest of the album backs this single incredibly well. I'm sure not everyone will concur, but I think this album is constructed quite nicely and gives an excellent portrayal of life in South Central LA, going a little deeper than the N.W.A. and G-Funk mentalities so prevalent at the time. And on top of this Ahmad just has a real unique voice and flow.

And here are a couple album previews for ya:

This track was featured on the New Jersey Drive Vol. 2 soundtrack in 1995. That same year it was the b side of a split promo vls with Ill Al Skratch's Don't Shut Down On A Player, but only the clean version, so I have provided a link for the uncensored version featured on the soundtrack below.
Here's this track: DivShare File - 01 Funky Piano.mp3

E Bros consisted of (Grandmaster!) Roc Raida, Knobody, Sean Cane & Wayne-O (who later released an album with Roc Raida).

(It seems as though pretty much every track from the EP is on youtube, so you can make a fully educated decision as to whether or not you want this in your library)

Okay, I usually try to know at least a little something about the artists behind the music to which I'm listening, but this one throws an interesting curve ball: on top of not really knowing anything about this guy, this record was released by London based label Subrosa Records, though was mixed in Brooklyn. These guys are definitely NYC cats, but I just find it interesting when something like this happens, how did this UK label hear these guys before any NY based indy labels?

P.S. Why are so many dope songs named "Rotten Apple"?

Again, another artist with way too much talent, and consistency on top of that! Who Wanna Taste has gotta be my joint, but being a huge Nick Wiz fan I can't discount Real MC's and I know many people consider the Monochrome produced track Da Professional to be the winner. Anyway, this guy and everything he was a part of (according to my knowledge) was dope as fuck. The 3 tracker was released on HDM Entertainment and Da Professionals/Real MC's 12" was released on Jungle Nills Records, which is confusing me at the moment because I have read and heard differing views on whether Jungle Nillz of Red Eye Krew was indeed associated with HDM. On Real MC's it very certainly sounds like it... Whatever the case, both of these 12"s are excellent.

Good stuff from Prime, and if I'm not mistaken (though I may very well be) I think he put this up for download on his birthday a few years ago...Anyway, as I said this is some good Chicago feeling material to which I shall add at a later day. I know Prime was at least at one point affiliated with Molemen, but I'm not sure what he's up to these days. I'm sure he can still spit though, so I'd really like to see him release some stuff in the near future.

Obviously, this is the almost superb solo release, or rather superb solo almost release, from Main Source front (and back) man, Paul C. trained William Paul Mitchell, who by this time also had some ghost producing credit from his work for Eric B. & Rakim. Anyway, this album was supposed to be released on Geffen in I believe 1996, but was scratched. Luckily, promos were sent out (I believe in '95?), so in this day and age of digital music we can all enjoy this "unreleased" work of musical genius. Needless to say, this is pretty much a classic, as I'm sure most readers will already know. This is quite possibly the greatest producer/emcee in full effect, not much more to hope for. Oh, and the fancy high quality 320kbps rip comes thanks to Ho1ogramz, who should hopefully have another installment up fairly shortly, so don't sleep on that site.

One of the earliest large scale albums out of Atlanta (and quite possibly the only Georgian album I will ever post). It took this group 3 years, 5 months, 2 days to catch a deal, thus the name. I was gonna do a big ol' write-up on this album, because I find it very interesting, mainly in its interaction with the other releases of the time, but it'll be a little shorter due to the large amount of posts I have to cover. In 1992 a great rift was starting in "hip-hop"; of course there already was a divide what with emceeing becoming more serious and providing a rival for the more fun raps of the day. But in '92 more sub-genres were gaining steam, of course G-Funk began its reign, the harder "gangsta" rap that started in the late '80s was becoming a larger bandwagon, the now "classic" grimey East Coast '90s sound was really starting to be well defined and then there were the Kriss Krosses and such that would dominate the pop realm of the genre. And then there's this album. I think what I find most impressive about this album (cross sub-genre wise) is that it is at the same time pop (which is almost by definition fake) and real, true, original hip-hop, representative both of the founding fathers of the genre and the ruff, rugged and raw steelo of the underground hip-hop culture that would blow up the mind '90s scene. Another asset I find in this album is that it is not a beats n rhymes album, the instrumentals are pretty good, but the beats aren't that great, and the emceeing isn't anything mind blowing. Granted, the lyrics are pretty good and they hold some weight, which is a plus, but I find it impossible to disagree with the fact that this album is exponentially better than the sum of its individual parts would presume it to be. In essence, give this album a re-listen, or a first listen if you haven't. And stew over it.

I had a request for these from the homie Tim. The first album is some pretty good, hard, '90s hip-hop, the second most assuredly falls off, but just in case some folks out there haven't heard:

I'd say my current favorite songs are Poops-Suckaz, Kool Keith-The Time Is Now, Tony Da Skitzo-The Grinch, and this amazing cut you can see below, courtesy of another Über-ill youtube channel: VocabularySpill. I like each of those tracks for a different and specific reason, but truth be told, this one has to be the best of them; one of the best joints I've heard...

What the Fuck happened to Grapevine and M.O.L.?! Those cats could lay shit Down. And whatever happened to Mad Sounds Recordings? they had some good music goin' on. I know Trends Of Culture released some more 12"s after this album and I know Grapevine & Dinky, but can anyone shed some light on whether they were behind the scenes of anything else to which I am ignorant? Anyway, back to introducing this to those who don't know: this is just another phenomenal album from 1993, Grapevine and M.O.L., the group members, produced the entire album except for the version of Off & On which made the album that was a remix by some dude named Lord Finesse. Dinky and Swift also offered production help on most of the tracks.

Anyway, I'm assuming this album is known, but just in case:

this track goes fucking hard...
